Top business leaders, artists and civic leaders will testify before Congress on April 5 in Washington, D.C. as part of the 24th annual Arts Advocacy Day, during which hundreds of grassroots arts supporters from across the United States take to Capitol Hill to advocate for pro-arts legislation. Arts Advocacy Day is organized by Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts, and is presented this year in partnership with Ovation, the only television network devoted to arts culture.

03-04-2011: Senate Democrats released their long-term funding plan for FY 2011 that includes level-funding for the National Endowment for the Arts at $167.5 million and $25 million for Arts in Education programs at the U.S. Department of Education. This version did not meet the 60 vote threshold needed to move forward however.

Although Congress quickly avoided a government shutdown this week, arts education funding somehow managed to get caught up in the two-week continuing resolution Band-Aid that was passed by both the House and Senate yesterday.

While the Continuing Resolution (CR) keeps the government running for another two weeks, it also makes a $4 billion cut in domestic spending, including a number of federal education programs.

03-01-2011: Congress passed a short-term Continuing Resolution (CR) to extend funds for FY 2011 for the next two weeks to avoid a federal government shutdown.  The CR makes $4 billion in cuts to domestic spending, including a number of federal education programs.  Among these programs designated for cuts is the $40 million Arts in Education program, which also funds VSA and Kennedy Center arts education programs as well.
