Today, The Telegraph in Macon, Georgia, posted an op-ed co-authored by Abel Lopez, president of the boards of directors of Americans for the Arts and chairman-emeritus of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and Jan Beeland, executive director of the Macon Arts Alliance. The op-ed was written in anticipation of the New Community Visions Initiative coming to Macon on Wednesday, February 17, 2016.

Today, the Obama Administration released its FY 2017 budget request to Congress—the last of his Administration. The request includes a proposed $2 million increase, to $150 million, for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). This proposed increase continues a welcomed funding climb, but falls short of the needs of the 95,000 nonprofit arts organizations and state and local arts agencies across the country.

The National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) has completed the selection of schools and teachers for the High School Model Cornerstone Assessment Pilot Project. The project is partially funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced the launch of the Arts Activation Fund, which is a $200,000 grant program that will support the work of local artists producing public art projects and cultural events in their neighborhoods.

In California State Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica)—the chair of the Joint Committee on the Arts—introduced Senate Bill 916 on January 27 to establish single-subject teaching credentials for dance and theatre. Also known as the Theatre and Dance Act, the bill was proposed in response to concerns raised at a hearing of the Joint Committee on the Arts held last fall about the lack of stand-alone credentials for dance and theatre.
