October is National Arts & Humanities Month (NAHM)! Back in 2010, the principal of an inner-city school in Boston, Massachusetts took a massive leap of faith and redirected his entire school to focus around arts education. The school, Orchard Gardens, was a K-8 school facing challenges and one of the lowest rankings of Massachusetts schools. Principal Andrew Bott decided to redirect school resources and refocus the school – in a year he fired the school’s security guards and brought on new teachers and a curriculum centered on the arts.

From August to September of this year, the Boston Arts Commission has commissioned eight temproary artworks to be installed at variouis intervals in the Roxbury neighborhodd of Boston. Artists range from high school students to emerging college studnets and locally-based artists. The artworks reference the history of Boston and the future of the city. As the the director of the Boston Arts Commission Karin Goodfellow stated, "We believe that public art is an expression of our passionate ideals, intellectual curiosity, and cultural narrative.

On July 11, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick signed into law the final state budget of $36.5 billion, including the appropriation of $12 million to the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC). Before signing the Massachusetts budget, Governor Patrick announced on July 7 at the Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield that he would allocate $15 million to the state’s Cultural Facilities Fund (CFF).

On Wednesday, June 18, Bob Lynch and other members of Americans for the Arts' staff joined The Art Institutes for their Congressional Arts Reception honoring this year's Annual Poster Design Competition winners. The Congressional Arts Caucus, co-led by Reps. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Leonard Lance (R-NJ), is one of the largest and most active on Capitol Hill, and is central to supporting the arts and arts education in the U.S. House of Representatives. Recently, 10 new members of Congress have signed up!

The Boston mayoral race between state Rep. Martin Walsh and Boston City Councilor John Conolly may show the two candidate’s differences, but there is certainly one common theme shining through—art and culture as the centerpiece for both campaigns. As the first open mayoral race in 20 years, there seems to be more room for different ideas and influence from Boston’s cultural communities.
With 2013 ending, we at Americans for the Arts find ourselves grateful for so many great arts achievements this year. There are so many partners doing amazing work in towns, cities, and states across the country--and in reflecting on this work, we wanted to especially thank the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and its staff for serving as the national lynchpin for the whole US arts field.
Representatives Frankel (D-FL), Lynch (D-MA), O’Rourke (D-TX), and Titus (D-NV) have all recently joined the Congressional Arts Caucus, which is currently co-chaired by Reps. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Leonard Lance (R-NJ). The caucus now has 163 members.
