The State of the States 2016 summarizes state policies for arts education identified in statute or administrative code for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Information is based on a comprehensive search of state education statute and codes on each state’s relevant websites. Complete results from this review are available in an online searchable database at www.aep-arts.org. Only those policies found in state statute, law or administrative regulations/code that refer explicitly to arts education are included.

This white paper covers what the U.S. Department of Education’s Arts in Education program is, how it works, and who it serves. It provides a quick overview of the grantees, the students they served, and a few stories from the program’s first 10 years to give you an idea of the types of arts integration models the grantees designed.

This research and policy brief provides an overview and analysis of ArtScan — a searchable clearinghouse of the latest state policies supporting education in and through the arts from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.  The brief reports findings in several key policy areas and helps to bring transparency and clarity about state policies for arts education in America.

Co-authored with Danielle Brazell of Arts for LA and Dr. Lauren Stevenson of Junction Box Consulting, the paper documents the journey we’ve been traveling for the past eighteen months to make it possible for schools and districts to embrace arts strategies for achieving the goals of Title I and improving educational outcomes for low-income students who are often undeserved in public schools.
