A nation plagued by school shootings watched the horror play out yet again in Southeast Texas when eight Santa Fe High School students and two teachers were killed and 10 others were wounded recently in the worst school shooting since the February assault on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Many of these victims were in an arts classroom making art at the time. Schools must be safe places for students to learn and pursue their passions in the arts and beyond. 

NACo Passes Arts Resolution at Recent Legislative Conference

On Monday, February 22, the National Association of Counties (NACo) approved an arts resolution at their annual Legislative Conference in Washington. The resolution supports the promotion of the arts and culture in America’s counties, and allows NACo to lobby and advocate for arts-related issues on Capitol Hill. It is evident that NACo is in strong support of increased funding for federal arts organizations.

Today, The Telegraph in Macon, Georgia, posted an op-ed co-authored by Abel Lopez, president of the boards of directors of Americans for the Arts and chairman-emeritus of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and Jan Beeland, executive director of the Macon Arts Alliance. The op-ed was written in anticipation of the New Community Visions Initiative coming to Macon on Wednesday, February 17, 2016.

Vans and Americans for the Arts envision a country where every child has access to—and takes part in—high quality learning experiences in the arts, both in school and in the community. As such, the two organizations partnered to create the Custom Culture Grant Program to promote awareness and support arts education in public schools. Today the partners announced that eight schools across the country that have been awarded a $2,500 grant for the 2015-2016 school year.

Today, Vans kicks off the seventh annual Vans Custom Culture competition, a national contest designed to give high school students a platform to embrace creative expression while joining a movement to support arts education. Americans for the Arts is pleased to announce the newly elected leadership of its four National Advisory Councils. These individuals were nominated by their peers to advise Americans for the Arts staff on programs and services for the fields of Arts Education, Emerging Leadership, Public Art, and the Private Sector. Each will serve three year terms beginning January 1, 2016 and will join an existing slate of advisory council members, national leaders, who use their field expertise to connect the national work of Americans for the Arts to the local level.

National Endowment for the Arts Awards $75,000 for Americans for the Arts

In its first 50 years, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) awarded more than $5 billion in grants to recipients in every state and U.S. jurisdiction. Today, the NEA announced awards totaling more than $27.6 million in its first funding round of fiscal year 2016, including an Art Works award of $75,000 to Americans for the Arts to support the Public Art Resource Center (PARC)
 
The Art Works category supports the creation of work and presentation of both new and existing work, lifelong learning in the arts, and public engagement with the arts through 13 arts disciplines or fields.
