Americans for the Arts announced today that Stephanie Johnson-Cunningham, a museum professional and arts educator based in Brooklyn, New York, will be awarded the 2019 American Express Emerging Leader Award at Americans for the Arts’ Annual Convention in the Twin Cities on June 15. The annual award recognizes an exceptional new and/or young arts professional for their exemplary leadership, deep engagement with community, and strong commitment to advancing the arts.

Americans for the Arts is pleased to announce that Director of Local Arts Services Ruby Lopez Harper was selected as one of seven Practices for Change Fellows at the National Accelerator for Cultural Innovation at Arizona State University. The fellowship is funded in part by an Our Town/Knowledge Building Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and supports individuals with experience using arts, culture, and design within other sectors such as health, transportation, planning, justice, and the environment in order to build stronger, more equitable communities.

Americans for the Arts announces a new publication, the Teaching Artist Companion to Aesthetic Perspectives: Attributes of Excellence in Arts for Change. The Companion supports artists who work with youth in K–12 programs in and out of school and the institutional leaders who support their work, but also informs funders, researchers, evaluators, and policy makers in the field of creative youth development.

Through Community Connections, Creative Forces is building networks of arts organizations in communities surrounding clinical sites, allowing patients to continue participating in the arts after treatment to ensure a successful transition back to civilian life. The networks also will provide options for service members and veterans who have not received clinical therapy, but would benefit from hands-on experiences with the arts.

Vans, the original action sports brand and advocate for creative expression, named Flagstaff High School from Flagstaff, Ariz. as the grand prize winner of the 10th annual Vans Custom Culture art competition. Flagstaff High School generated the most votes for their designs winning $75,000 to put towards its arts program on behalf of Vans and its program partners, Journeys, Yoobi, Laguna College of Art + Design (LCAD) and Americans for the Arts. The four additional finalists – Atherton High School from Louisville, Ky., New Bedford High School from New Bedford, Mass., Seneca Valley Senior High School from Harmony, Pa. and Van Wert High School from Van Wert, Ohio – will each receive $10,000 to put towards their arts programs, along with a limited-edition Vans gift.

U.S. House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee Chair Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN)

The U.S House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee strongly rejected President Trump's budget request to eliminate both the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities by appropriating $167.5 million in funding for FY 2020, an increase for both agencies of $12.5 million.

Americans for the Arts will hold its 2019 Annual Convention in the Twin Cities from June 13-16, 2019. It is the largest gathering in the nation of arts leaders and their partners in creative business, education, and government. Through more than 40 sessions, participants will explore the deep economic, civic, and social impacts that the arts generate across the nation, as well as the role of the arts in creating and sustaining healthy and equitable communities.
