Land art artist Michael Heizer has been developing "City" in the Garden Valley, Neveda since the early 1970's. Today, the land around the artwork is under threat of development. Though the land that the artwork sits on is owned by the artist, there is a movement starting to protect the land around it.

There has been interest in turning that land into missile site, an oil-and-gas exploration site, or a location for a nuclear waste rail line. Various art institutes, including the Los Angeles County Art Museum, have developed a petition of support in protecting the land. In addition to Michael Heizer's work, the land also contains desert ecologies and ancient rock art.
