A new report by Sotheby’s Mei Moses identified that the work of female artists is greatly outperforming the work of male artists in repeat auction sales. Art Agency Partners found that Sotheby’s Mei Moses’s Art-Female index rose by 72.9% between 2012 and 2018, meaning that the work of a female artist is worth 72.9% more in 2018 than if it was bought in 2012. In comparison, the men’s index only rose 8.3% in the same time frame. Michael Klein, head of Sotheby’s Mei Moses, commented that while male artists still dominate art auctions, the ballooning value of women’s art potentially indicates a shift in women’s share of the art auction market in the next decade.
