The Seattle Arts Commission, in order to assist, promote and encourage interest and awareness in the fine and performing arts, sponsored this study of the economic impact of Seattle Arts organizations. Economics Research Associates (ERA) surveyed 34 local arts organizations, including the 15 major groups, to obtain data to describe and measure their economic contribution. The arts organizations, for the purpose of the ERA study, are treated like a local industry that produces and sells arts and cultural experiences to the community.

This report of the Artsplan makes recommendations for implementation of specific programs for the arts in Washington State during the next ten years and addresses the needs of the arts. Included in this report is a general estimate of the economic impact of the arts. Of the 627 Washington State arts groups who participated in Artsplan, only 306 responded to the economic financial survey and reported earnings of $13,054,509 and expenses of $15,747,811 during 1977-78. This is volume II of the Artsplan project, a project of the Arts Alliance of Washington State in cooperation with the Governor's Office of Cultural Affairs of the State of Washington. This volume provide the statistics and findings of the survey. In looking at the total project and impact of ARTSPLAN, the process did achieve the goals as set forth in the original proposal. The most extensive survey of arts groups and resources ever made in the state now exits in directory form. Over 3,000 individuals and 628 arts groups have worked together to define needs and find solutions.
