Canadian book exports are important to Canada, not only commercially, but also culturally and diplomatically. In successfully exporting its cultural wares, such as books, Canada enhances its image abroad by being seen as a sophisticated country with distinct cultures. Clearly, then, the industry and the government must work together to improve Canada's lacklustre performance in book exports by developing an aggressive strategy to simulate Canadian book and rights sales abroad.

Based on data from the U. S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis, consumer expenditures for admissions to performing arts events in 1991 amounted to $4.7 billion, or 0.3% less than in 1990. Even at this level expenditures for performing arts surpassed that of motion pictures for the third consecutive year. Contrary to 1990, the performing arts figure fell below spectator sports in 1991. As nonprofit organizations, art museums are exempt from federal income tax in the . This exemption does not mean that tax rules have no effect on museums, however. Far from it. The various tax instruments affect art museums indirectly but dramatically. They change the incentives of individuals and corporations to make donations of art, they change the relative cost of raising capital for museum projects, and they change the incentives of museums to make passive investments in securities rather than active investments in unrelated businesses.

An analysis of the Philadelphia cultural sector generated by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance published by the Pew Charitable Trusts and the William Penn Foundation. The report reviews data from 218 organizations and finds that the art and cultural sector provides 14,000 jobs and more than 12 million visits to the area annually. Findings also indicate that the portion of the cultural sector with the greatest need for financial investment are smaller and emerging organizations.
