The study consists of two parts. The first investigates the City Center audience in New York City. The second investigates tour audiences in San Antonio and Houston, Texas and New Orleans, Louisiana, and compares them to the New York audience. Seven weeks before the opening of the Joffrey spring 1976 season at the City Center Theater, the first of the Dance in America programs, which featured the Joffrey company, was broadcast on the PBS television network with support from the Exxon Corporation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

New Orleans, Louisiana [population: 500,000] is one of the 33 communities, ranging in population from 8,500 to 2.5 million, included in this three year study. The study examined data from 789 nonprofit organizations in order to compile a national average. The study was designed to document nonprofit arts expenditures in a cross section of American communities and demonstrate the economic impact gained from investing in the arts.

In addition to the original impetus for the book, there are other reasons for the revision, even though (or perhaps precisely because) the League no longer exists: The Leagues planning and development process was as important as the product, and it has proved replicable. The author examines tax checkoff legislation in Oregon, Alabama and Louisiana. In simple terms, a tax checkoff for the arts permits the filer of a state income tax from to designate that some portion of the tax refund should be used to fund arts activities or programs. The checkoff is strictly voluntary and although suggested amounts may be indicated on the return, there are no obligations or limitations on contributions. This article details how the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic (founded 1998) has evolved to sustain New Orleans' musicians in mind, body and spirit by developing a unique access point to primary care, preventative health and social services and occupational outreach.
